Life after death

Abu Hurayrah(ra)reported that Allah’s Messenger()said:Indeed, a dying person is witnessed by angels. If he were righteous, he (the Angel of Death) says, “Depart, O good soul that inhabited a good body; depart in a praised state; and receive glad tidings of happiness, sweet aromas, and a Lord who is not angry.” He continues to say this until it leaves the body. It is then taken up to the (first) heaven, where permission is sought for it to be admitted. It is said, “Who is this?” He (an angel) replies, “So and so.” It is then said, “Welcome, good soul that inhabited a good body; enter in a praised state; and receive glad tidings of happiness, sweet aromas, and a Lord who is not angry.” This repeats (in every heaven), until it finally reaches the (seventh) heaven above which is Allah (swt) As for an evil man, he (the Angel of Death) says, “Depart, O malicious soul that inhabited a malicious body; depart in a condemned state; and receive evil tidings of boiling fluids and dirty wound discharges (to drink), and other types of suffering of similar nature – all paired together.” This continues to be said until it leaves the body. It is then taken up to the (first) heaven, where permission is sought for it to be admitted. It is said, “Who is this?” He (an angel) replies, “So and so.” It is then said, “Unwelcome, malicious soul that inhabited a malicious body; return in a condemned state, because the gates to the heavens will not open for you.” Thus it is sent down from the heaven, and it enters the grave. The pious person sits in his grave without fear or terror. He is asked, “What did you do?” He replies, “I adhered to Islam.” He is then asked, “Who is that man?” He replies: “Muhammad, Allah’s Messenger () He brought to us clear signs from Allah; and we believed him.” He is then asked, “Did you see Allah?” He replies, “It is not possible for anyone to see Allah (in the first life).” An opening is made (from his grave) to the Fire, so that he sees its various sections crushing each other. He is told, “Look at that from which Allah(swt) has saved you.” Another opening is then made (from his grave) in the direction of Jannah; and he views its grandeur and the things (bounties) in it. He is then told, “This will be your position. You lived with certitude (about Allah’s promises); upon it you died; and upon it you will be raised – when Allah (swt) wills.” The evil person is made to sit in his grave in a state of fear and terror. He is asked, “What did you do?” He replies, “I do not know.” He is asked, “Who is that man?” He replies, “I heard the people say things; and I said the same.” An opening then appears (from his grave) in the direction of Jannah; and he views its grandeur and the things (bounties) in it. He is told, “Look at that from which Allah (swt) has deprived you.” Another opening appears (from his grave) to the Fire; and he observes its various sections crushing each other. He is told, “This will be your abode; in doubt you lived; upon it you died; and upon it you will be raised – when Allah wills.”(ibn majah)

Abu Umama (ra) said,”When I die, do with me as the Prophet () ordered us, saying, ‘When one of your brothers dies and you have smoothed over the earth upon his grave, let one of you stand at the head of the grave and say, “O So and so Son of So and so” for he will hear, though he cannot reply – and then say, “O So and So, son of So and so,” and he will say, “Direct me, Allah (swt)have mercy upon you mercy on you,” though you will not hear it, but should say, “Remember the creed (Kalima Tayyiba) upon which you departed from this world, testifying that there is no god but Allah (swt), and Muhammad () is His servant and messenger, and that you accepted Allah (swt)as your Lord, Islam as your religion, Muhammad () as your prophet, and the Quran as your exemplar.” For then the two angels Munkar and Nakir will take each other’s hand and say, “Let us go, what is there to keep us beside someone who has been instructed how to make his plea?”A Man said, “O Messenger of Allah (), what if one does not know the name of his mother?” and he answered, ‘Then one should mention his descent from his mother Eve (sa) , saying, “O so and so son of Eve (sa) ” (Muajam al Kabir Tabrani ).

Narrated Jundub bin ‘Abdullah (ra) -Messenger () said: Among the nations before you was a man who got a wound and was impatient. He took a knife and cut his hand. Blood did not cease to flow until he died. Allah the Exalted said: My slave hurried to bring death upon himself. So I will not allow him to enter Paradise. (Bukhari and Muslim).

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) : The Prophet ()once passed by two Graves and said, “These two persons are being punished not for a major sin (to refrain from). One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other used to go about with calumnies(to make enmity between friends).”   The  Prophet () then took a green leaf of a date-palm tree, split it into (pieces) and fixed one on each Grave. They said, “O Allah’s Apostle ( )! Why have you done so?” He replied, “I hope that their punishment might be lessened till these (the pieces of the leaf) become dry.” (Bukhari – Book 4,Hadith 217)

Sayyidina Ibn ‘Abbaas RadiyAllahu ‘Anhuma said: “Some of the as-haab (companions) of Sayyidina Rasulullah sat on a grave, not knowing that it is a grave (as there was no sign of a grave). They heard a person reciting Suratul Mulk till he completed it. They came to Sayyidina Rasulullah and informed him. Sayyidina Rasulullah said: “It (this surah) is ‘maa-ni-‘ah’ (protects from the punishment of the grave), it is ‘mun-jiyah’ (saves), it saves a person from the punishment of the grave.” – Tirmithi.
