JIHAD/QITAL/STRUGGLE/EFFORTS

The Arabic word “jihad” means struggling or striving or effort .

The Arabic words for “war” are “harb” or “qital,” which are found in the Noble Qur’an and Hadith.

In the West, “jihad” is generally translated as “holy war,” a usage the media has popularized. In Arabic “the holy war means “al-harbu al-muqaddasatu.”

FOR CHRISTAINS -The term holy war is to refer the Crusades ( thousand years ago christians waged wars against islam)

FOR MUSLIMS -the term Jihad is applied to all forms of striving/struggle/efforts and has developed some special meanings over time.

Jihad is Islamic commandment(ONLY FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH AND HIS RASOOL’S PLEASURE/RAZA) and it does not follow worldly desires, whereas Terrorism is not an Islamic commandment, and it, obviously, follows the worldly desires.

SHIRK IS OF 2 TYPES GREATER(CAN BE SEEN) AND LESSER (RIYA/SHOWOFF) SAME WAY JIHAD IS OF 2 TYPES GREATER(AGAINST NAFS) AND LESSER(AGAINST KUFFAR/MUNAFIQS)

JIHAD E AKBER (GREATER JIHAD) AND JIHAD E ASGAR(LESSER JIHAD)

The mujahid is he who makes jihad against his nafs (ego) for the sake of obeying Allah.(Ibn Hibban (#1624, 2519) Albani in “Sahiha”)

……The best jihad is a perfect Hajj (Bukhari #2784)

On another occasion, a man asked: “Should I join the jihad?” The Prophet asked, upon him peace, “Do you have parents?” The man said yes. The Prophet said: “Then do jihad by serving them!” (Bukhari #5972)

“A word of truth spoken in front of an oppressive ruler.”(BETTER JIHAD) (Nasa’i #4209)

The strong one is not the one who overcomes people, the strong one is he who overcomes his nafs [ego].(Al-Haythami in Majma` al-Zawa’id).

Imam Nawawi’s Book of Jihad, there are Hadith concerning external as well as internal acts of Sunnah such as, Salat at night which embraces brushing off laziness, standing, bowing and prostrating for a long time; and other acts including fighting until wounded and dying as a martyr. [Riyadh us Salihiin, Book of Jihad].

LESSER JIHAD(BATTLE FIELD AGAINST KUFFAR/MUNAFIQS)

Standing for an hour in the ranks of battle is better than standing in prayer for sixty years. (Ibn Asakir 4/6165)

One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah nor did he express any desire (or determination) for Jihad died the death of a hypocrite. (Muslim)

“Perform Jihad against the disbelievers with your wealth, with yourself and with your tongues”(abu dawood)

“He who supports a Ghazi (Mujahid) in the Cause of Allah, will have performed Ghazw (fighting in Jihad) himself. He who takes care of a Ghazi’s family in a way that is better, will have performed Ghazw himself.” [Al-Bukhari]

TYPES OF JIHAD/STRUGGLES

NUMBER 1–Jihad an-Nafs (learning-practicing-teaching islam iman ihsan )

“The best Jihad is for one to perform Jihad against his own self and against his desires” [Abu Nu’aim]

“Jihad against one’s own self in the Cause of Allah is the best Jihad” [at-Tabaraani]

(during the farewell Hajj): The (true) Muslim is he who people are safe from (being harmed by) his tongue and hand. The (true) Mujahid is he who performs Jihad an-Nafs in the obedience of Allah. And the (true)Muhajir (the migrant in the Cause of Allah) is he who abandons error and sin” [Ahmed, al-Haakim and at-Tabaraani]

NUMBER 2—Jihad ash-Shaitan (ignoring temptations and doubts caused by shaintan ie by keeping clean your intentions(do it only for pleasure/raza of Allah) and ignoring waswasas (keep patience))

“Surely, Shaitan is an enemy to you, so treat his as an enemy” [35/6]

“He (Shaitan) said: My Lord! Because you have sent me astray I shall verily adorn the path of error for them in the earth, and shall mislead them everyone, except such of them as are Your perfectly devoted slaves” [39/40]

“And say: ‘My Lord! I seek refuge with You from the suggestions of the shayateen (devils). And I seek refuge with You, My Lord! Lest that they may attend (or come near) me'” [23/97-98]

NUMBER 3 —Jihad al-Kuffar wal-Munafiqeen (by using the heart, tongue, wealth and one’s self (body)).

Jihad al-Kuffar is usually practiced with the hand, while Jihad al-Munafiqeen is usually practiced by the tongue (by refuting them and exposing their misguided ways, etc.)

“Perform Jihad against the disbelievers with your wealth, with yourself and with your tongues”(abu dawood)

“But strive hard against them (ie. the Kuffar), (by preaching) with the utmost endeavor, with it (ie. the Qur’an)” [25/52]

“O Prophet! Perform Jihad against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be severe against them” [66/9]

“O you who believe! What is the matter with you, that, when you are asked to go forth in the Cause of Allah, you cling heavily to the earth? Do you prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter” [9/38]

“Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject Faith fight in the cause of Evil: so fight you against the friends of Shaitan – feeble indeed is the cunning of Shaitan” [4/76]

NUMBER 4—Jihad Against those who Practice Injustice, Innovations and Sin (USING HAND FIRST OR USING TONGUE OR ATLEAST HEART MUST SAY ITS WRONG)

“He amongst you who witnesses an evil, let him change (remove, stop) it with his hand. If unable, then with his tongue, and if unable, then with his heart, and this indeed is the weakest Iman.” [Muslim]

When I want to talk to Allah I say prayers and when I want that he talk to me I recite quran- Hazrath Ali(ra)
