Life and death
Narrated Amr ibn al-‘As (ra) : Ibn Shamasah (ra) said: We went to Amr ibn al-‘As (ra) and he was about to die. He wept for a long time and turned his face towards the wall. His son said: Did the Messenger of Allah (saws) not give you tidings of this? Did the Messenger of Allah (saws) not give you tidings of this? He (the narrator) said: He turned his face (towards the audience) and said: The best thing which we can count upon is the testimony that there is no god but Allah (swt)and that Muhammad (saws) is the Apostle of Allah. Verily I have passed through three phases. When I die, let neither female mourner nor fire accompany me. When you bury me, fill my grave well with earth, then stand around it for a time which a camel is slaughtered and its meat is distributed so that I may enjoy your intimacy and (in your company) ascertain what answer I can give to the messengers (angels) of Allah (swt). (Muslim, Book 1, Number 0220)
Abu Umama (ra) said,”When I die, do with me as the Prophet (saws) ordered us, saying, ‘When one of your brothers dies and you have smoothed over the earth upon his grave, let one of you stand at the head of the grave and say, “O So and so Son of So and so” for he will hear, though he cannot reply – and then say, “O So and So, son of So and so,” and he will say, “Direct me, Allah (swt)have mercy upon you mercy on you,” though you will not hear it, but should say, “Remember the creed (Kalima Tayyiba) upon which you departed from this world, testifying that there is no god but Allah (swt), and Muhammad (saws) is His servant and messenger, and that you accepted Allah (swt)as your Lord, Islam as your religion, Muhammad (saws) as your prophet, and the Quran as your exemplar.” For then the two angels Munkar and Nakir will take each other’s hand and say, “Let us go, what is there to keep us beside someone who has been instructed how to make his plea?”A Man said, “O Messenger of Allah (saws), what if one does not know the name of his mother?” and he answered, ‘Then one should mention his descent from his mother Eve (sa) , saying, “O so and so son of Eve (sa) ” (Muajam al Kabir Tabrani 7/287).
Whenever someone died, the prophet (saw)
would stand for awhile at the burial site and then say, “Seek forgiveness
for your (Muslim) brother and pray for his steadfastness since he is now being
questioned.” [Abu Dawud]
Abu Hurayrah(ra)reported that Allah’s Messenger(saws)said: When a believer dies, the angels of mercy come to him with a piece of white silk. They say, “Depart(from the body) to Allah’s (granted) happiness.” It departs with the most beautiful scent of musk. They even pass it from one angel to the next, smelling it. When they arrive at the gate of the (lowest)heaven, they are asked, “What is this beautiful scent coming from the earth?” They continue their ascent; and as they arrive at each one of the heavens, the same thing is said to them. They (the angels) take it to (the location of) the souls of the believers. They (the other souls) are happier in meeting it than are those to whom a beloved one returns after a long absence. They ask it, “What happened to such and such (a disbeliever)?” Some of them interrupt, “Leave him until he rests, because he was in the grief of the world.” However, he says, “He died; did he not come to you?” They (the angels) then say, “He was taken to a bottomless pit (of Fire).” As for a disbeliever, the angels of punishment come to him with coarse fabric and say, “Depart(from the body) to Allah’s wrath.” It departs, smelling like the worst of decayed corpses. It is then taken to the gate of the earth.(ibn hibban)
Narrated some Companions of the Prophet (ra) that they heard the Prophet (saws) saying: On the Day of Resurrection, it would be said to the children: Get into Paradise. The Prophet (saws) said: They will say: 0 Lord! (We shall not enter Paradise) unless our fathers and mothers enter (with us). The Prophet(saws) added: They will be brought. Allah (swt) will say: What is the matter that they are reluctant to go to Paradise? The children will say: But what about our fathers and mothers! Allah will say: Enter Paradise you and your parents. (Musnad Ahmad).
