Life and death
Once, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah(saws)came out wearing his tahband. Someone saw it and requested him for it. The Sahaaba replied, “The Prophet(saws)” had a need for the tahband at that time but rejecting someone who asks from him was not his habit.” When they asked the man why he requested it, he explained. “Oath on Allah(swt)! I did not ask for it to ear it, but that it, but that it may become my kafn. Sahl states that this tahband eventually did become his kafn. – Bukhari, Vol. 1, Kitaabul-Janaaiz, Baabu Man A’adal-Kafn
Anas bin Mālik has reported: That
he had a short stick given to him by the Holy Prophet (saws). When he died, it
(the stick) was buried with him, between his shirt and the side of his body. (
Ibn Kathīr in al-Bidāyah wan-nihāyah (4:368))
It has been stated that the life of a Muslim before and after his death are the same (i.e. they should be respected equally). – Mishkaat, Baabud-Dafn and Mirqaat
Imam Muslim writes:Uqba b. ‘Amir reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Allah’s Messenger offered prayer over those who had fallen matyrs at Uhud. He then climbed the pulpit as if someone is saying good-bye to the living and the dead, and then said: I shall be there as your predecesor on the Cistern before you, and it is as wide as the distance between Aila and Juhfa (Aila is at the top of the gulf of ‘Aqaba). I am not afraid that you would associate anything with Allah after me, but I am afraid that you may be (allured) by the world and (vie) with one another (in possessing material wealth) and begin killing one another, and you would be destroyed as were destroyed those who had gone before you. ‘Uqba said that that was the last occasion that he saw Allah’s Massenger on the pulpit.
Narrated Jundub bin ‘Abdullah (ra) -Messenger (saws) said: Among the nations before you was a man who got a wound and was impatient. He took a knife and cut his hand. Blood did not cease to flow until he died. Allah the Exalted said: My slave hurried to bring death upon himself. So I will not allow him to enter Paradise. (Bukhari and Muslim).
Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) : The Prophet (saws)once passed by two Graves and said, “These two persons are being punished not for a major sin (to refrain from). One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other used to go about with calumnies(to make enmity between friends).” The Prophet (saws) then took a green leaf of a date-palm tree, split it into (pieces) and fixed one on each Grave. They said, “O Allah’s Apostle (saws )! Why have you done so?” He replied, “I hope that their punishment might be lessened till these (the pieces of the leaf) become dry.” (Bukhari – Book 4,Hadith 217)
Sayyidina Ibn ‘Abbaas Radiyallahu ‘Anhuma said: “Some of the as-haab (companions) of Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam sat on a grave, not knowing that it is a grave (as there was no sign of a grave). They heard a person reciting Suratul Mulk till he completed it. They came to Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and informed him. Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam said: “It (this surah) is ‘maa-ni-‘ah’ (protects from the punishment of the grave), it is ‘mun-jiyah’ (saves), it saves a person from the punishment of the grave.” – Tirmithi.
Anas (ra) narrated that the Prophet(saws)said: If any Muslim dies and four of his closest neighbours witness that he was pious, Allah says: I approve what you know about him, and forgive him (what you do not know). (AI-Hakim).
When Hadrat Imam Hasan ibn Hasan ibn Ali (ra)passed away, his wife kept a dome over his grave for the entire year.” – Bukhart, Vol. 1, Kitaabul-Janaaiz and Mishkaat, Baabul-Bukoa alal-Mayyit
