Life and death
Sayyidina Abii Hurairah Radiyallahu ‘Anhu says, Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam said: “I swear an oath in the Name of that Being in whose hands my life is, when a mayyit (deceased) is put in his grave, he hears the footsteps of the people when they leave him. If he is a Mu-min, his salah comes and stand at his head side; his zakaah at his right; his saum (roza, fast) at his left; his good deeds, piety, and ihsaan to the people at his feet. If ‘adhaab (punishment) comes to him from his head side, his salaah will say there is no entrance from my side. Then, it comes from the right side, his zakaah will say there is no entrance from my side. It then comes from the left side; his saum will say there is no entrance from my side. Then, it will come from the side of the feet, his good deeds, piety, ihsaan to the people, will say there is no entrance from our side. At the end of this hadith it is stated then his body is returned to its original state of dust (This is the case with the majority, some bodies remain in the same state in the grave). His ruh (soul) remains (lying) in a gentle breeze, or in the ‘arwaah tayyibah’, i.e. in the form of a green bird in the trees of Jannah. – Ibn Abii Shaybah, Tabrani in the ‘Awsat’, Ibn Hibbaan in his ‘Sahiih, Haakim, Bayhaqii.
“The souls of the martyrs live in the
bodies of green birds who have their nests in chandeliers hung from the throne
of the Almighty. They eat the fruits of Paradise wherever they like and then
nestle in these chandeliers. Once, their Lord cast a glance at them and said: “Do
you want anything?” They said: “What more can we desire? We eat the
fruit of Paradise wherever we like.” Their Lord asked them the same
question thrice. When they saw that they would be continued to be asked and not
left (without answering the question), they said: “O Lord, we wish that
You may return our souls to our bodies so that we may be slain in Your cause
once again. When He (Allah) saw that they had no need, they were left (to their
joy in Heaven).” [Saheeh Muslim (4651)]
A shahid (martyr) is favored by Allah with seven qualities:He is forgiven as soon as his blood gushes forth; he is shown his position in Jannah; he is adorned with the adornments of Imdn; he is married to seventy two wives of al-Hur ul- ‘In (fair females with wide lovely eyes); he is protected from the torment of the grave, and is saved from the Great Fear(on the Day of Judgement); on his head is placed the crown of dignity, each of whose jewels is better than the world and all what is in it; and he is allowed to intercede for seventy of his relatives. (trimidhi)
Ibn ‘Abbas(ra) narrated that Allah’s Messenger(saws)said:When your brothers were killed in the battle of Uhud, Allah ($g) cast their souls into green birds that frequent the rivers of Jannah, eat of its fruits, and rest in lamps of gold hanging in the shadow of the Arsh ‘. When they found this pleasant food, drink, and repose, they said, “Who will inform our brothers, on our behalf, that we are alive in Jannah, and that we receive sustenance – so that they do not forsake jihad (fighting in Allah’s way) or turn back during the fighting?” Allah said, “I will inform them for you.” (al hakim)
“The soul of a believer is a bird eating from the trees of Paradise until Allah restores it to its body on the Day of Resurrection.” (An-Nasa’ee, Ibn Majah, Shaikh al-Albanee Sharh al-Aqeedah at-Tahaawiyyah (p. 455, footnote: 1)]
