Life after death
Ibn ‘Umar, Abu Talhah, and Anas (ra) reported that, after the battle of Badr, the Prophet (ﷺ) commanded his followers to cast twenty four of the most disdainful among the dead of the Quraysh into a veryfilthy ditch in Badr. Then, as was his practice after victory, he spent three nights in the neighborhood of the battleground. On the third day, he had his animal prepared for departure, and then went and stood with his companions at the verge of the ditch. He called out the dead men with their names and the names of their parent saying: 0 such and such, son of such and such! O such and such, son of such and such! … Don’t you wish that you had obeyed Allah and His Messenger? Indeed, we have found our Lord’s promises to us true; have you found you Lord’s promises true?Whereupon ‘Umar(ra)(and others) exclaimed, “Are you addressing them after having been dead for three nights, and when these bodies have no souls in them? Can they hear? Allah(swt)says: Verily, you cannot make the dead hear you.” He (ﷺ)replied: By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, They can hear me NOW; and you cannot hear what I am saying better than they can! But they cannot respond. (bukhari, muslim, ahmed)
Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (ra) placed his forehead on the grave of Prophet Mohammad (ﷺ). Marwan Ibn al-Hakam, the Governor of Madina, saw him and held his neck. Abu Ayyub (ra) said I did not come to the Stone (Idol). I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Do not weep for Islam if the qualified people were in-charge, but weep for it, if it was under the charge of unqualified. (mustadrak Al-Hakim)
‘Uthman(ra)narrated that after Allah’s Messenger(ﷺ)buried a person, he (ﷺ)would stand by the grave and say:Ask Allah to grant to your brother forgiveness and firmness (of words), because he is being questioned at this moment (al hakim)
The status of the deceased is raised [during their time in the grave], and the deceased ask Allah why this has happened. Allah replies,’Your son has prayed for your forgiveness'” [al-Bukhari Al-Adab Al-Mufid(chp on parents))
Abu Ishaq al-Qarshi (ra) narrates that there was a man with us in Madina. Whenever he used to see any bad deed which he was not capable of stop with his hand, he used to go to the grave of Prophet ﷺ and say: O the inhabitants of Qabr i.e. Prophet and Sahaba (Abu Bakr and Umar) and our helpers please look towards our state. (Bayhaqi 3879)
Hadrat Aisha (ra) narrates: Whenever I entered the house in which Prophet ﷺ and my father (i.e. Abu Bakr ra) are buried,I used to take off my sheet (from head) thinking that it’s only my father and husband (whom I am visiting), however By Allah! When Umar (ra) got buried with them, I never went inside without being fully covered, this is because of being ashamed of Umar (ra) [Musnad Ahmed bin Hanbal, Volume No. 6, Page No. 202]
Sayyida A’isha used to pray regularly in her room, which used to contain the Prophet’s (ﷺ) blessed grave (Recorded by Bukhari (#3303), Muslim (#5325))
Narrated Al-Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn AbuBakr: I said to Aisha! Mother, show me
the grave of the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) and his two Companions (ra). She
showed me three graves which were neither high nor low, but were spread with
soft red pebbles in an open space. [Abu Dawud, Book 20, Number 3214]
Narrated
Abu Bakr bin ‘Aiyash : Sufyan At-Tammar told me that he had seen the grave of
the Prophet elevated and convex. (Sahih Bukhari vol 2 book 23 Hadith 473)
(below earth)who ever visits my grave after my death it is same he has visited
me in my life.(Tabrani Vol 12 NO 406, Bayhaqi Shu’ab ul Iman Vol3 NO 489)
“The Prophets are alive and they pray in their graves” (al-Mundhiri and al-Bayhaqi)
Yahya (ra) related to me from Malik (ra) from Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abi Sasaca(ra) that he had heard that Amr Ibn al-Jamuh al-Ansari (ra) and Abdullah Ibn Umar al-Ansari (ra), both of the tribe of Banu Salami, had their Grave uncovered by a flood. Their Grave was part of what was left after the flood. They were in the same Grave, and they were among those martyred at Uhud. They were dug up so that they might be moved. They were found unchanged. It was as if they had died only the day before. One of them had been wounded, and he had put his hand over his wound and had been buried like that. His hand was pulled away from his wound and released, and it returned to where it had been. It was forty-six years between Uhud and the day they were dug up. Malik (ra) said, “There is no harm in burying two or three men in the same Grave due to necessity. The oldest one is put next to the qibla.” (Malik’s Muwatta – Book #21, Hadith #21.20.50).
Narrated Jabir (ra): When the time of the Battle of Uhud approached, my father called me at night and said, “I think that I will be the first amongst the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) to be martyred. I do not leave anyone after me dearer to me than you, except Allah’s Apostle’s (ﷺ) soul and I owe some debt and you should repay it and treat your sisters favorably (nicely and politely).” So in the morning he was the first to be martyred and was buried along with another (martyr). I did not like to leave him with the other (martyr) so I took him out of the Grave after six months of his burial and he was in the same condition as he was on the day of burial, except a slight change near his ear. (Bukhari Book #23, Hadith #434).
