Aulia visitation
Narrated by Hadrat Ibn Abbas that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed some graves in the Blessed City of Madinah, when he turned His Enlightened Face towards them and recited:’Assalam-o-Alaykum ya ahl al quburi yaghfir ullahu lana wa la kum antum salafuna wa nahnu bil athar.’ (Tirmidhi Sharif)
“I used to forbid you from visiting the graves (but now I give you permission), you should visit them” (Muslim, ibn majah,Mishkat p.154)
Shaykh Abdul Haq Dehlwi writes that because the period of ignorance had just passed, RasoolAllah (ﷺ) forbade the visitation due to fear of the Muslims returning to their old ways. However, when the people became well acquainted with the orders of Islam, then the dear Prophet (ﷺ) allowed the visitation to take place (Ashi’atul Lum’aat, vol.1 p.717).
Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqah (radiyAllahu ta’ala anha) narrates that: “When the dear Prophet (ﷺ) used to pass the night with her, in the last part of the night he would go to the graveyard of Madinah (Muslim, Mishkat p.154)
“Whoever visits his parents’ graves or visits one of their graves every Friday, then he will be forgiven and will be written as being one of the pious” (Mishkat p.154)
Allama ibn Abideen Shaami (rahmatullah `alaih – d. 1253 H) writes that Imam Shafi’i (ra) said: “I seek blessings from Abu Haneefa and go near his grave. When I am need of something I perform two raka’ahs of salah and then I go near his grave and pray to Allah. Thus, my need is fulfilled quickly” (Raddul Muhtar, vol.1 p.38)
Shaykh Abdul Haq Dehlwi writes: “Imam Shafi’i said that the grave of Hadrat Musa Kaazim (ra) is a place where supplications are accepted readily” (Ashi’atul Lum’aat, vol.1 p.715)
Commenting on the verse “And seek a means of approach to him” (5/35), Imam Sawi writes: “To say that Muslims who visit the graves of the saints are Kafir because you believe they are worshipping other than Allah is a sign of clear heresy. To visit the saints is not worshipping other than Allah, rather it is a sign of loving those whom Allah loves” (Tafseer Sawi, vol.1 p.245)
Abu Bakr al-Minqari said: I was
with (al-hafiz) al-Tabarani and (al-hafiz) Abu al-Shaykh in the Prophet’s
Mosque, in some difficulty. We became very hungry. That day and the next we
didn’t eat. When it was time for `isha, I came to the Prophet’s grave and I
said: “O Messenger of Allah, we are hungry, we are hungry” (ya
rasullAllah al-ju` al-ju`)! Then I left. Abu al-Shaykh said to me: Sit. Either
there will be food for us, or death. I slept and Abu al-Shaykh slept.
al-Tabarani stayed awake, researching something. Then an `Alawi (a
descendant of `Ali) came knocking at the door with two boys, each one carrying
a palm-leaf basket filled with food. We sat up and ate. We thought that the
children would take back the remainder but they left everything behind. When we
finished, the `Alawi said: O people, did you complain to the Prophet? I saw
him in my sleep and he ordered me to bring something to you.[Al-Hafidh Ibn
Jawzi, Kitab al Wafa, Page No. 818, #1536]
Imam Ibn al Mubarak in his
{Az-Zuhd}, Hakeem Tirimdhi in his {Nawadir al Asool}, Ibn Abi Duniya and Ibn
Mundah narrated from Sa’eed Ibn Musayb (rah) who narrated from Salman (al Farsi
– Radhi Allah) that the Spirits of momineen reside in the Barzakh of earth
and “THEY CAN GO WHEREVER THEY WANT”whereas the spirits of Kufaar are
in Sajeen…Hakeem Tirimdhi narrates from Salman al Farsi (Ra) and narrated
similar hadith)… …..Ibn Abi Duniya narrated form Malik bin Anas (i.e. Imam
Malik – Rahimuhullah) who said: This hadith has reached me that Spirits of
Momineen are free and they go wherever they want [As-Suyuti in Sharh as

Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyyah has also proven this in
his magnificent Kitab ar Ruh, Page No. 244, Published by Dar Ibn Kathir,
