THE ETIQUETTE/MANNERS OF SALAAM/GREETING
The Prophet (sallallahu walahi wasallam) said:”A Muslim owes another Muslim six duties. 1.To greet him when he meets him, 2.to accept when he gives him an invitation, 3.to give him good counsel when he asks him for advice, 4.to pray for mercy for him when he sneezes and says “Praise be to Allah” , 5.to visit him when he is ill, 6.and follow him (attend his funeral) when he dies”.
The one who makes salaam first is spiritually closest to Allah.
First salam and then start your conversation.
convey salam and then leave the place .
It is waajib to answer the Salaam immediately and a sin to delay.
Assalamu-alaykum is plural, whilst Assalamu-alayka is the singular of the greeting.
Be the first to make Salaam LOUD/AUDIBLY, irrespective of whether you know him or not(even to children).
A mounted person should greet the one who is walking and a person on foot should greet the one who is sitting; a smaller group should greet a larger group and the young should greet their elders.
Make salam again n again even if you get separated by a tree, pillar or wall.
When entering the masjid, one should first pray the 2 rakahs of Tahiyyatul Masjid before greeting those present.
When entering a house, make salaam to the occupants of that house.When leaving a house, depart with making salaam.
The intention of the dua’a which is multiple depending on the length of our salam and the degree to which we extend it.
When answering a letter one should also return the greetings.
Don’t
1.To make Salaam during Azaan, Iqaamat Namaaz, Khutba, when a person is in the Istinja, or if he or she is having a meal, is not allowed.
2.To make Salaam by lifting the fingers of the palm is not allowed as this is the manner of the Christians and Jews.
3.It is also Haraam to make Salaam to a Kaafir, Mushrik, Bud- Mazhab or Gustakh-e-Rasool (one who insults the station of Prophethood).
4. It is reccommended to repeat the greeting 3 times but should not go beyond this.
5. Do not greet non-Muslims with the words of salaam. Instead, greet them with any other formal (not religious) greetings.
When I want to talk to allah I say prayers and when I want that he talk to me I recite quran- Hazrath Ali(ra)
