“Bismillahir Rahmannir Raheem””Al-Hamdu Lillaahi Rabbil ‘Aalameen was Salaatu was- Salaamu ‘Alaa Sayidinaa Muhammadin wa Aalihi wa Asabihi Ajma ‘een (tauheed- risalat- ahkirat and islam-iman-ihsan)

“Truly whoever abused the Holy Prophet or ascribed any fault to him or attributed any defect to his family, religion or his habit, or reproached him, or compared the Holy Prophet with any defective thing with the objective of degrading his personality and prestige, he is truly an abusive person and deserves to be executed. We make absolutely no exception to this verdict, whether the insult has been committed intentionally or unintentionally. This has been the verdict of all the Ulama of the Umma from the time of the Companions to the present day.” (Qadi Ayyad – Shifa, V2 P214)

OPINION OF GREAT SCHOLARS AND SAINTS

Ghousal Azam, Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (radi Allahutala anhu) states: “There are 73 groups as foretold by Sayyiduna RasoolAllah (peace be upon him) and (bear in mind that), the Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat was the rightful group”. (Ghunyatut Taalibeen)

Imam Ghazzali (radi Allahutala anhu) writes: “The Ahle Sunnat Wal Jammat is the successful Firqah (group) and it is this Firqa which weighs or determines its thoughts and its according to the scales of the Holy Quran”. (Mujarribaate Imam Ghazal)

Hazrat Sha Wali’ullah Muhaddith Dehlawi (radi Allahutala anhu) states: “As RasoolAllah (peace be upon him) has stated, follow this ‘Sawad-e-Azam’, and when the four Madhabs are within the Sawad-e-Azam then the following of any one of them, is followance of the Sawad-e-Azam. Therefore, refuting any one of them is refuting the Sawad-e-Azam”. (Aqdul Jayyad)

Imam Sufyan Souri (radi Allahutala anhu) states: “By Sawad-e-Azam is meant those who are called the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat”. (Al Mizaanul Qubra)

Shah Abdul Aziz Muhaddith Dehlawi (radi Allahutala anhu) states in his book “Fatawa Azeezi” (Vol. 2, pg. 4) that: “The various parts of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat in Aqaa’id such as the Ash’ariya, the Maaturadi, in Fiqh such as the Hanifa, the Shafi’i, the Hambali, in Tassawwaf such as the Qaaderi, the Chisti, Naqshabandi, the Suhurwardi, this servant considers all of them to be the truth”.

Imam Rabbani, Mujaddid Alif Thaani (radi Allahutala anhu) states in the second chapter, page 67 of his “Maktubaat Shareef” that: “The way of salvation is followance of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat. May Almighty Allah Ta’ala bestow blessings upon the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, in their speech, in their actions, laws, for this is the successful group. Besides this, all other groups have become victims of deception. Today, nobody realises how much these misled groups will be punished, however, on the Day of Qiyamah this secret will become apparent. Even though at that time this knowledge will be of no benefit to the misled.”

Let us now see what the definition of Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l Jama’ah was according to the classical scholars of this aided, Victorious sect (Tai’fatul-Mansoorah) of Islam.

Shaykh al-Islam Ahmad ibn Hajar al-Haytami (d. 974/1567; R.A.)-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Haytami defined the Sunni Muslims as follows in his book Fath al-jawad:  “A mubtadi (innovator) is the person who does not have the faith (aqid’ah) conveyed unanimously by the Ahl as-Sunnah. This unanimity was transmitted by the two great Imam’s Abu’l Hasan al-Ashari (d.324/936; Rahimahullah) and Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (d.333/944; Rahimahullah) and the scholars who followed their path.” Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Haytami also said in his book al-Fatawa al-Hadithiyya (pg. 205): “Man of bid’ah means one whose beliefs are different from the Ahl as-Sunnah faith. The Ahl as-Sunnah faith, is the faith of Abu’l Hasan al-Ashari, Abu Mansur al-Maturidi and those who followed them. One who brings forth something which is not approved by Islam becomes a man of bid’ah.”

Imam Ahmad Shihab ad-Din al Qalyubi (d.1069/1659; R.A.)-Imam al-Qalyubi wrote on the fourth volume of his marginalia to the book Kanz ar-raghibin:  “One who departs from what Abu’l Hasan al-Ashari and Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (Allah’s mercy be upon them) reported is not a Sunni. These two Imam’s followed the footprints of Rasulullah and his Sahaba (may Allah be pleased with them all).”

Imam Abdullah ibn Alawi al-Haddad (d. 1132 AH; Rahimahullah)-Imam al-Haddad stated in The Book of Assistance (pg. 40):  “You must correct and protect your beliefs and conform to the pattern of the party of salvation, who are those known from among the other Islamic factions as the “People of the Sunnah and Jama’ah” (Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l Jama’ah). They are those who firmly adhere to the way of the Messenger of Allah , and of his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all). If you look with a sound understanding into those passages relating to the sciences of faith in the Book (Qur’an), the Sunnah, and the saying of the virtuous predecessors, whether they be Companions or followers, you will know for certain that the truth is with the party called the Ashari (the Maturidi’s are also upon the truth), named after the

Shaykh Abu’l Hasan al-Ashari, may Allah have mercy on him, who systematized the foundations of the creed of the people of the truth, and recorded its earliest versions, these being the beliefs with the Companions and the best among the followers agreed upon.”
