Dars e Imam-kissing Thumb

Dras E Imam, Shariath

“Bismillahir Rahmannir Raheem”Al-Hamdu Lillaahi Rabbil ‘Aalameen was Salaatu was- Salaamu ‘Alaa Sayidinaa Muhammadin wa Aalihi wa Asabihi Ajma ‘een (tauheed- risalat- ahkirat and islam-iman-ihsan)

To remember a happiness or joyous event is the Sunnah, and to appoint a day and date for this is proven from it (masnoon). Branding it as polytheism (shirk) is the lowest level of ignorance and a sign of not being of the deen. Allah(swt) – ordered Hadrat Musa(as), “Make the Bani Israel remember the day in which Allah(swt) descended His blessings on them.,,-Surah Ibrahim, Verse 5 This refers to the day Firaun drowned; the day Manna and Salwa descended, etc. – Khazaainul-Irfaan

When the Holy Prophet came to Madina, he found the Jews there keeping fast on the Day of Ashura (10th of Muharram). He questioned them about this and was told, “It was on this day that Allah(swt) saved and protected Hadrat Musa (as) from Firaun. In thanks of this, we fast.” The Holy Prophet replied, “We are closer to Musa (as) than you are.” He then kept fast himself and ordered this fast of Ashura to be kept.-Mishkaat, Kitaabus-Saum, Saumut-Tatawu, Section 3

Incidentally, this fast was Fardh in the beginning of Islam. Its obligation is now annulled (mansookh) but it being preferred (Mustahab) still remains. Regarding this very fast of Ashura, it was said, “O Prophet of Allah(swt), there is likeness towards the Jews in it.” He replied, “If we are alive next year, we shall keep two fasts.” – Ibid .

In other words, the Holy Prophet did not forsake it. In fact, he increased it to be saved from similitude to the Jews.

The Holy Prophet said, “Whosoever has touched the name Muhammad with his hands, then kissed his hand with his lips and rubbed it on his eyes, then he sill see Allah Ta’ala just as the righteous ones see and my intercession will be close to him even though he is a sinner.” (An Nawafi ul Atri’aa)

In Jannat, when Hazrat Adam (as) desired to meet the Holy Prophet , then Allah Ta’ala sent Wahi (revelation) to him, “From your generation, he will become apparent in the later years”. Then Hazrat Adam (as) desired from Allah Ta ala to meet the Prophet . Allah Ta ala showed him the Noor of the Holy Prophet on the Shahadat finger of his right hand. The Noor recited the Tasbeeh of Allah Ta’ala. It is for this reason that this finger is known as the Kalima finger. Allah Ta’ala showed the beauty of the Holy Prophet on both the thumbnails of Hazrat Adam (as) like a mirror. Then, Hazrat Adam (as) kissed both his thumbnails and turned them over his eyes. Thus, this Sunnah of Hazrat Adam (as) became consistent in his descendants. When Hazrat Jibraeel Ameen (as) informed Rasoolullah of this, he said, “That person, who when hearing my name in Azaan, kisses his thumb nails and turns it over his eyes, he shall never go blind.” (Tafseer Roohul Bayaan)

Once, the Holy Prophet entered the Masjid and sat down near a pillar. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (ra)was seated beside him. Hazrat Bilal (ra)then stood up and commenced with the Azaan. When he said: “Ash hadu Ana Muhammadur Rasoolullah”, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (ra)placed both the thumb nails on to his eyes and said “Qurratu Aini bika Ya RasoolAllah” (Ya RasoolAllah! You are the coolness of my eyes). When Hazrat Bilal (ra)completed the Azaan, the Holy Prophet said, “O Abu Bakr! Whosoever does like you have done, Almighty Allah will forgive all his sins.” (Tafseer Roohul Bayaan)

Sayyiduna Imam Hassan (ra)said, “Whosoever hears the Mu’azzin say ‘Ash Hadu Ana Muhammadur Rasoolullah’ and says, ‘Marhaba bi Habibi’ and ‘Quratu Aini Muhammad bin Abdullah’ and then kisses both thumbs and keeps it on his eyes, then he will never become blind and his eyes will never be sore.” (Maqaaside Husna)

It is desirable after (hearing) the first Shahaadah of Azaan, to say: “Sallal laahu alaika Ya RasoolAllah” and after hearing the second Shahaadah, to say “Qur’ratu Aini bika Ya RasoolAllah”. You should then kiss the nails of your thumb and place them on the eyes and say: “Allahuma Mati’ni bis Sam’i Wal Basari” then the Holy Prophet will take such persons behind him into Jannah. (Shaami Shareef)

In another Kitaab it is stated that both the thumbs of the hands should be kissed and rubbed on the eyes and when the Mu azzin says: “Ash hadu Ana Muhammadur Rasoolulah” then say, “Ash Hadu Ana Muhammadan Abduhu wa Rasooluhu Raditu billahi Rabban Wa bi Islami Deenan wa Muhammadin Nabbiyan”. (Tahtaawi Shareef)

Salaate-Mas’oodi states, ”The Noble Messenger is reported to have said, “On the Day of Qiyaamat, I shall search for the person who used to place his thumbs on his eyes when hearing my name during the Azaan. I shall lead him into Jannat – Vol. 2, Chapter 20 .Under the ayat, “و اذا نادیتم الی الصلوۃ”  5/58 Allama Ismail Haqqi (ra) writes, “Kissing the nails of the thumbs and the shahaadat finger when saying “Muhammadur-Rasoolullah has been classified as weak (zaeef) because it is not proven from a marfoo Hadith. However, Muhadditheen have agreed that to act upon a zaeef Hadith to incline people towards [good] deeds and instill fear within them is permitted.” – Tafseer Roohul-Bayaan

Shaami states, “On the testimony (of Prophethood) in Azaan, it is Mustahab to say “Sallallaahu Alaika Ya RasoolAllah on the first and “Quratu Aini bika Ya RasoolAllah(swt) on the second. Then, place the nails of your thumbs on your eyes and say, “Allah(swt)umma Matini bis-Sami wal-Basr.” The Holy Prophet will lead the person who does this into Jannat. The same has been documented by Kanzullbaad, Qohistaani and in Fataawa Soofia.

Kitaabul-Firdaus states that the Prophet has said, I shall lead into Jannat the person who kisses his thumbnails when hearing “Ash’hadu anna Muhammadar-Rasoolullah. I will also place him amongst the ranks of the inmates of Jannah” The complete discussion on this has been given in the marginal notes on Bahrur-Raaiq, ‘Ramli’. 23.3a – Vol. 1, BaabulAzaan This extract has given the reference of 5 books – Kanzul-Ibaad, Fataawa Soofia, Kitaabul-Firdaus, Qohistaani and the marginal notes on Bahrur-Raaiq. All of them have ruled this practice to be Mustahab.
