PLACING OF FLOWERS OF THE GRAVE

“There is not a thing but celebrates His praise”. (17/44)

The graves of the Saints are the signs of Allah(swt)and to respect the signs of Allah(swt)(i.e. the signs of His deen) is a Quranic instruction(22/32)

Bear in mind—-action which is a remover of hardship for sinners causes an increase in the rank of the pious. duas eradicate the sins of criminals like us but increase the distinction of the pious.

e.g. walking towards the Musjid erases our sins but increases the rank of the virtuous.

The placing of flowers on the grave of an ordinary or a pious Muslim is permissible.

The flowers or plants are a creation of Allah Ta ala and as long as they remain fresh they continuously recite the Tasbih of Allah Ta ala, praising and glorifying Him. The heart of the deceased is satisfied.

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: Once the Prophet (saws), while passing through one of the grave-yards of MADINA or MAKKAH heard the voices of two persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet ( said, “These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid).” The Prophet then added, “Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends).” The Prophet then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave. On being asked why he had done so, he replied, “I hope that their torture might be lessened, till these get dried.” (Bukhari – Volume 1, Book 4, Number 215  ,    Mishkaat. Baabu Aadaabil-Khalaa, Section1)

so putting flowers or petals on a grave is a established sunnah.

Imam Nawawi (ra)writes in the annotation of this Hadith,”It has been said that the punishment will be lessened because, as long as they are fresh, tasbeeh will be made by them. Based on this Hadith, Ulama have ruled that reciting the Holy Quran near the grave is Mustahab (preferred because this is more suited to lessen punishment than the tasbeeh of a branch.” .

Allama Tahtawi (ra) states: “Some among our preceeding Ulama have given a legal verdict that the action of placing flowers or fresh branches is Sunnat and is proven from Hadith”.Wet grass should not be removed from the grave because the wet grass prays the Tasbih of Allah Ta ala and gives solace to the buried. If it is removed then you have committed an unjust deed for the deceased.

It is stated in the famous Hanafi Fiqh book Fatawa Alamgiriyyah/Hindiyyah (Kitab al- Jana’iz) that it is allowed to put flowers on a grave.

Mullah Ali al-Qari writes in the commentary of the above-mentioned Hadith in al-Mirqat fi Sharh al-Mishkat that:“Our Ulama have issued a ruling that to place fragrance and plants (over a grave) are a Sunnah practice”.

Hazrat  Sheikh Muhaddith Dehlvi (ra) states with regard to this: “This very Hadith has been accepted by the Ulama as proof in placing flowers on the graves”. (Ashatul Lam aat)

However, it should be bared in mind that the action which is a remover of hardship for sinners causes an increase in the rank of the pious, e.g. walking towards the Musjid erases our sins but increases the rank of the virtuous. duas eradicate the sins of criminals like us but increase the distinction of the pious.

TIME AND DAY OF VISITING

It is Sunnat to visit the graves. One should go once a week, either on a Thursday, Friday,Saturday or Monday. While visiting the Mazaar of a Wali, if you see something there which is against the Shariah,  then do no not stop going, but think of it as bad and try and avoid it because to stop a pious act because of seeing bad things is not correct.  (Radd-ul-Mohtar)

When I want to talk to allah I say prayers and when I want that he talk to me I recite quran- Hazrath Ali(ra)

Make sure you forward this to others .
