Awliya -Urs Defination
“Bismillahir Rahmannir Raheem”Al-Hamdu Lillaahi Rabbil ‘Aalameen was Salaatu was- Salaamu ‘Alaa Sayidinaa Muhammadin wa Aalihi wa Asabihi Ajma ‘een (tauheed- risalat- ahkirat and islam-iman-ihsan)
URS
‘Urs is the day of the passing away of the
noble Saints. The word ‘Urs has been taken
from the Hadith: “Sleep just
like the bride.” (Mishkhat) The Angels say to the Pious in the grave, “Sleep
with restfulness and comfort just like a bride. In Arabic, the bride
and groom are called Aroos.
“Urs,
is done annually for a saint by his disciples (Mureeds). They hold this Urs in
the mosque near the grave of the saint. They recite the Qur’an and various
scholars give lectures on different topics of Islam. At the end a du’a is said
and then hospitality is done for the people. The hospitality is solely done for
the blessings.
To a wali, death is the culmination of a life long yearning to meet Allah and His Rasool (SAWS). A single gathering of Urs is attended by many Mashaaikh, Ulama and Sufiya.
“When the Munkar and Nakir (the angels who question the deceased after death), questions the wali in the grave about Allah, Islam and the Prophet (SAWS) and the Wali successfully answers the questions, they (lovingly) declare Sleep like the bride who will only be awakened by the beloved (Mishkaat). Hence the word Urs is traced to a Hadith.
Ibne Ali Sheebah reports that: “The Prophet (SAWS) used to visit the graves of the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud every year. He used to send Salaams to them. The four righteous Khulafa upheld this Sunnah also, who used to visit the graves of Shuhadae Uhud (Those companions of the prophet (SAWS) who lost their lives in the Battle of Uhud, which took place in Madina). (Fatawa Shaami, Tafseere Kabeer Durre Mansoor).
Shaami states, “Ibn Abi Shalba (ra)states that the Holy Prophet(saws)used to go to the graves of the martyrs (Shuhadaa) of Uhud every year.” – Vol. 1, Baabu Ziyaaratil-Quboor.
Tafseer-e-Kabeer and Durre-Mansoor state, “It is proven that the Prophet(saws). used to go to the graves of the martyrs every year and make Salaam to them. The four Khulafaa used to also do this.”
Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz Muhaddith Dehlwi(ra) has written that if the day of Urs is meant for invocation or reminding for the deceased one, there is no harm. That gives benefit to the living as well as the deceased ones. (Fatawa Aziziyah)
THE BURNING OF INCENSE STICKS, LOBAAN, ETC.
To light incense sticks (agarbatti) and lobaan in the Mazaar of the Awliya (or the gatherings of Khatams) (not over the mazaar )and for the benefit of the visitors is permissible. One should bear this in mind that it is done not for the deceased but rather for the comfort of the visitors, as they will feel better in a sweet-scented environment.
(Under the ayat -9/18) .Allama Haqqi (ra)writes, “Building shelters over the graves of the Learned, Saints and Pious or placing sheets {ghilaafs), mantles and turbans on them are all permissible actions when establishing their respect amongst the masses is intended (so that they don’t hold them in contempt).” – Tafseer Roohul-Bayaan
