Guidance

‘Abdullah ibn Masood (Ra) reported that once Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) drew a line in the dust with his hand and said, “This is the straight path of Allah.” Then he drew a series of lines to the right of it and to the left and said, “Each of these paths has a devil at its head inviting people to it.” He then recited ( 6/153) And that, this is My’ straight path, then follow it and follow not other paths for they will deviate you from His path. This He has ordered you that haply you may be self-restrained, “Verily this is my straight path so follow it and do not follow the (twisted) paths.” (Collected by Ahmad, Nisai and Darimi; see Mishkat ul-Masabih, 1/166)

…..“O people, I have left among you something of such a nature that if you adhere to it you will not go astray: Allah’s Book and my close relatives who belong to my household(ahle baith).” [Sunan Tirmidhi Volume 005, Book 162, Hadith Number 3718]

“I have left two things behind me for you (the Ummah). You will never go astray as long as you follow these two things. One of these two things is Allah’s Holy Book (the Holy Quran) and the other is the Sunnah of his Holy Prophet (ﷺ).” (Muwatta Imam Malik)

…”My Community will split into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in the fire except one group. They asked: Who are they, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Those that follow my way and that of my companions.” [ Sunan tirmidhi 18:2650, sunan Abu Dawud, and al-Darimi related it.]

And in another version of this Hadith the Prophet (ﷺ) goes onto say that the saved sect, “…Are those who follow my and my Sahaba’s path” (Tirmidhi, vol. 2, pg. 89)

Abu Amir al-Hawdhani said, “Mu’awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan (may Ra) stood among us and said, ‘Beware! The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) stood among us and said’: ‘Beware! The People of the Book before (you) were split up into 72 sects, and this community will be split up into 73, seventy-two of them will go to Hell and one of them will go to Paradise, and it is the majority group (Jama’ah).’  (Abu Dawood in his Sunan 3/4580 -2/503), Ahmad (4/102) and al-Haakim (1/128))

Abu Ghalib said that during the crisis with the Khawarij in Damascus he saw Abu Umama one day and he was crying. He asked him what made him cry and he replied: “They followed our religion,” then he mentioned what was going to happen to them tomorrow. Abu Ghalib said: “Are you saying this according to your opinion or from something you heard the Prophet say?” Abu Umama said: “What I just told you I did not hear from the Prophet only once, or twice, or three times, but more than seven times. Did you not read this verse in Al `Imran: The day faces will be white and faces will be dark…”? (3/106) to the end of the verse. Then he said: I heard the Prophet say: “The Jews separated into 71 sects, 70 of which are in the fire; the Christians into 72 sects, 71 of which are in the fire; and this Community will separate into 73 sects, all of them are in the fire except one which will enter Paradise.” We said: “Describe it for us.” He said: “The Sawad al-a`zam [the majority group ] .”[Reference : Haythami said in Majma` al-zawa’id: Tabarani narrated it in al-Mu`jam al-kabir and al-Awsat, and its all narrators are trustworthy (thiqat) This hadith is Sahih ]

Ibn Umar (Ra) reported Allah’s Messenger (
ﷺ) as saying:  “Follow the great mass (as-Sawad al-Azam) for he who kept himself away from it, in fact would be thrown in Hell Fire.” (Ibn Majah; vide: Mishkat, 1/174, by A.H. Siddiqui).

The translator of Mishkat-ul-Masabih (A.H. Siddiqui, pg. 113) said in the footnote to the last Hadith:  “There is a good deal of difference of opinion as to what the term Sawad al-Azam implies. The overwhelming majority of the scholars are of the view that As-Sawad al-Azam means the largest group of the learned scholars and pious persons whose opinions are held in high esteem in Islam.”

…”Allah will never allow my Ummah to unite upon misguidance and incorrect beliefs. Allah’s mercy, blessings and protection are with the largest group of Muslims. And he who deviates from this largest group of Muslims will be thrown into Hell.” (Tirmizi)

… “Two are better than one, and three better than two; so stick to the Jama’ah for verily Allah, Most Great and Glorious, will only unite my nation on guidance.” (Ahmad (4/102) ,al-Haakim (1/128),Abu Dawood (2/503), among others with similar wording but with the addition)

…”He who separates from the main body (of the Ummah) by even a hand’s breadth from the Community he throws off Islam from his neck.” (Mishkat-ul-Masabih, 1/185 & Sunan Abu Dawood, 3/4740).
