“Beware of extremism in religion, since those before you were only destroyed by extremism.” (Sunan Nasa’i, Musnad Ahmad and others)

Three people came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet asking about the worship of the Prophet. When they were informed, they thought it was too little and said, “Who are we in comparison to the Prophet for indeed Allah has forgiven him his past and future sins.” One of them said, “As for me, I will pray the whole night long.” Another said, “I will fast every day without breaking it,” and yet another said, “I will stay away from women and never marry.” The Messenger of Allah came [and when he heard of this, he] said, “Are you the people who said such and such? As for me, By Allah, indeed I am the most god-fearing and most cautious amongst you, but I fast and I eat, I pray and I sleep, and I marry women. Whoever desires other than my Sunnah (Way), then he is not from me.” (Bukhari #4776)

Abû Hurayrah relates that the Prophet ﷺ said “This religion is easy. No one becomes harsh and strict in the religion without it overwhelming him. So fulfill your duties as best you can and rejoice. Rely upon the efforts of the morning and the evening and a little at night and you will reach your goal.” [Sahîh al-Bukharî]

“Which people are the most tested?” He replied, “The Prophets, then the righteous, then those after them, and then those after them. Every person is tried according to the strength of his religion, if his religion is strong, he is tested more, and if his religion is weak, his trial is lessened. A person continues to be tested and tried until he walks on the earth totally free of sin (for they would be effaced due to the trials).” (Tirmidhi #2398 & ibn Majaah #4023 )

…..“O people, I have left among you something of such a nature that if you adhere to it you will not go astray: Allah’s Book and my close relatives who belong to my household(ahle baith).” [Sunan Tirmidhi Volume 005, Book 162, Hadith Number 3718]

You will not go astray so long as you hold fast to them. These are the Book of Allah, and the Sunnah of His Messenger.” (Malik)

“Knowledge consists of three things: the decisive verses (Qur’an), authentic Hâdîth and prescriptions rightly deduced from the two.  What is beside them is superfluous.”  (Ibn Majah 1/54 and Abu Dawud 2879)

“Allah will never allow my Ummah to unite upon misguidance and incorrect beliefs. Allah’s mercy, blessings and protection are with the largest group of Muslims. And he who deviates from this largest group of Muslims will be thrown into Hell.” (Tirmizi)

“He who deviates from the largest group of Muslims, even as much as a hand span, has himself cut off his connection with Islam”. (Abu Dawud)

“Without doubt, my Ummah will never be gathered in misguidance. Whenever you see disagreement, then hold fast to the greater majority.”[Ibne Majah]

…”Follow the great mass (as-Sawad al-Azam) for he who kept himself away from it, in fact would be thrown in Hell Fire.” (Ibn Majah; vide: Mishkat, 1/174, by A.H. Siddiqui).

The overwhelming majority of the scholars are of the view that As-Sawad al-Azam means the largest group of the learned scholars and pious persons whose opinions are held in high esteem in Islam.”

Qiyas/research-Mu’adh Bin Jabal (r.a.)  narrated that some of his companions said, “When Allah’s Messenger ﷺ  intended to send him (Mu’adh Bin Jabal) to Yemen, he asked: “How will you judge when the occasion of deciding a case arises?”  He replied, I shall judge in accordance with Allah’s Book.   He was asked: “(What will you do) if you do not find any guidance in Allah’s Book?”  He replied, “(I shall act) in accordance with the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ .”   He ﷺ  asked, “(What will you do) if you do not find any guidance in the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ  and in Allah’s Book?”  He replied, “I shall do my best to form an opinion and I shall spare no effort.”  Allah’s Messenger ﷺ  then patted him on the breast and said: “Praise be to Allah Who has helped Allah’s Messenger to find something which pleases Allah’s Messenger.”   (Abu Dawud 3585)
